Floor Planner: Draw a 2D Floor Plan Online

You want to know if a sofa fits before you buy it, show a contractor where the new wall goes, give a tenant a clear layout of a rental, or add a simple plan to a property listing. For that you do not need architecture software, just a quick way to draw rooms to real sizes and place doors, windows and furniture on them.

This floor planner runs in your browser. It opens with an example one bedroom apartment so you can see how it works, and your plan saves automatically in this browser as you draw. It draws in 2D only: there is no 3D view or walkthrough, and it is not meant for construction drawings.

How to draw a floor plan

1. Choose Units under the drawing area: feet and inches, or meters and centimeters. The planner picks feet for US browsers and meters elsewhere; you can switch at any time.
2. Click New blank plan to clear the example (Undo brings it back if you change your mind).
3. Draw a room. With Room, drag on the grid to draw a rectangle; the width, depth and area show while you drag. With Custom room, click each corner in turn for L shapes and angled walls, then click the first corner, press Enter or double click to finish.
4. Type exact sizes. With the room selected, the panel lists every wall. Type a length such as 12' 6" or 3.8 m and press Enter.
5. Add doors and windows. Choose Door or Window and click on a wall. Drag it along the wall to position it, and set its width in the panel. For doors, flip the hinge side or make it swing outward.
6. Add furniture. Click a piece in the furniture row; it appears in the middle of the view. Drag to move it, use the square corner handle to resize, the round handle to rotate, or type exact width, depth and rotation in the panel.
7. Add labels such as "Kitchen" or "Street side" with Label, then type the text in the panel.
8. Name the plan and use Download PNG, Download PDF or Print. Use Save project to keep an editable copy.

Measuring your space first

A plan is only as good as the measurements. With a tape measure or laser measure, go room by room:

• Measure each wall from corner to corner at floor level, inside the room. Write the lengths on a rough sketch as you go.
• Measure door and window openings and their distance from the nearest corner.
• Note fixed items: radiators, built-in closets, kitchen counters, the toilet and tub.
• Measure the diagonals of rectangular rooms. If the two diagonals differ by more than an inch or two, the walls are not square, and a Custom room with the real corner positions will be more accurate.

The planner accepts lengths in the forms people actually write them. In feet mode, 12' 6", 12 6, 12.5 (feet), 150" and 12ft 6in all mean the same wall. In meters mode, 3.8 means 3.8 m, and 380 cm or 3800 mm also work. For furniture and door widths, a plain number means inches or centimeters. You can type metric lengths in feet mode and the other way around; the planner converts them.

Rooms, walls and area

Each room shows its name and floor area in the middle, and its wall lengths along the inside of each wall (turn these off with Show wall lengths for a cleaner print; they still show on the selected room). The panel shows the selected room's area and perimeter, and with nothing selected it lists every room and the total area of the plan.

Walls are numbered clockwise from the first corner you drew. When you type a new length, the room stretches along that wall: every corner at or beyond the end of the wall moves by the difference. For a rectangle this keeps the room square. For an L shaped room it lengthens that arm of the L. You can also select a room and drag the round corner handles, with the grid snapping each corner into place.

To move a room, click it once to select it, then drag it. Dragging a room that is not selected moves the view instead, which makes the plan easy to pan on a phone. Doors and windows move with their room. Furniture does not, so you can rearrange rooms without dragging everything inside.

Doors, windows and furniture

Doors are drawn with a leaf and a dashed swing arc, and windows as a thin triple line in the wall, the way most floor plans show them. New doors are 32 inches (80 cm) wide and new windows 36 inches (100 cm); change the width in the panel. Doors between two rooms only need to be added to one of them.

The furniture library has 13 pieces. Each starts at a common real size, which you can change:

Give any piece a label such as "Queen bed" or "Existing dresser", rotate it by 90 degrees with one click, or duplicate it (useful for dining chairs). When snap is on, dragged furniture lines up its edges with the grid, rotation snaps to 15 degree steps, and holding Shift while rotating gives single degrees.

A few clearances help you judge whether a layout works. The International Residential Code asks for at least 15 inches from the center of a toilet to a side wall and 21 inches of clear space in front of it. Plan roughly 30 to 36 inches for walkways, 36 inches beside a bed you walk around, and 36 inches behind dining chairs so people can get up. Draw a rug or a labeled rectangle as a stand-in if you need to see a clearance zone.

Worked example: will the sectional fit?

A living room measures 15 ft 6 in by 12 ft 9 in, with a 32 inch door near one corner and a 6 ft window on the long wall. Draw a rectangle, type 15' 6" for wall 1 and 12' 9" for wall 2, and the panel shows 198 sq ft. Add the door and window where they are. Add a Sofa, set it to 112 x 64 in (the sectional's listed size), and slide it against the wall opposite the window. Add a Table as a coffee table at 48 x 24 in, 18 inches in front of the sofa, and a Rug at 96 x 60 in sent to the back. Now you can see whether the door swing hits the sofa and whether the walkway past it stays near 36 inches. Try a second arrangement with Duplicate and a quick rotate, then export the one that works as a PNG to send to your partner or the store.

Common uses

• Furniture shopping: set a piece to the exact size from the product listing and check the walkway and door swing before you order.
• Renovation planning: draw the current layout, duplicate the room, and sketch the new version next to it for your contractor.
• Rentals: give tenants and cleaners a clear plan with room names and areas.
• Listings: a simple labeled plan helps buyers and renters understand the layout faster than photos alone.
• Moving: label each room on the plan so movers know where every box and piece of furniture goes.

Grid, snap, zoom and shortcuts

The grid shows fine lines at your snap size and heavier lines every foot or meter (fewer when zoomed far out). Snap sizes are 3 in, 6 in, 1 ft or 2 ft in feet mode and 5, 10, 25 or 50 cm or 1 m in meters mode. Turn Snap to grid off for free placement. A scale bar in the corner shows the current zoom.

• Zoom: the + and − buttons, Ctrl + scroll wheel, or pinch on a trackpad or touch screen. Fit frames the whole plan.
• Pan: drag empty space, drag with two fingers on a phone, or drag with the middle mouse button.
• Full screen: gives the editor the whole window, which helps a lot on phones. Press Esc or the button again to leave.
• Keys: V select, R room, P custom room, D door, W window, T label, Delete removes the selection, Ctrl+Z undo, Ctrl+Y or Ctrl+Shift+Z redo, Ctrl+D duplicate, arrow keys nudge by one grid step (Shift for four), Esc cancels drawing.

Undo keeps the last 100 changes.

Saving, exporting and printing

Your plan is saved automatically in this browser's local storage after every change, so closing the tab does not lose it. That copy lives only on this device and browser, and clearing site data removes it. Use Save project (.json) to download an editable file, and Open project to load it later or on another computer. Nothing is uploaded at any point.

• Download PNG: an image about 2,400 pixels on the long side with the plan name, total area, a scale bar and the grid square size. Good for listings, messages and presentations.
• Download PDF: one page, US Letter when you work in feet and A4 in meters, turned to landscape automatically for wide plans. A footer gives the approximate scale (for example 1:60) when printed at 100%, or actual size.
• Print: opens your browser's print dialog with the plan scaled to the page.

Honest limits

• 2D only. There is no 3D view, walkthrough or rendering.
• Walls have one fixed thickness, drawn centered on the lines. There are no curved walls, stairs or electrical symbols.
• One plan per file. For a two story house, draw the floors side by side and label them, or save one project per floor.
• The furniture library is small. Resize a Table or Wardrobe box and label it for pieces that are not in the list.
• It is not a construction or permit drawing. For structural work, use the plan to explain your idea to an architect or contractor, who will produce the official drawings.
