AM PNG is a lossless format. That makes it right for logos, screenshots and graphics, and wasteful for photos. A product photo exported as PNG can be several times the size of the same photo as a good JPG, which slows pages and can trip upload limits. This converter turns PNG files into JPG in your browser, with a quality slider and a choice of background color for transparent areas.

How to convert PNG to JPG
- Drag your PNG files into the box at the top of this page, or click it to choose them.
- Pick the background color for transparent areas. White is the default and is what most marketplaces want.
- Set the quality. 80 to 85 suits product photos on the web. Use 90 or more for images you will edit again.
- Open one result at full size and check edges and fine texture before converting the rest.
- Download the JPGs one by one, or all of them as a ZIP.
When JPG is smaller than PNG, and when it is not
PNG stores every pixel exactly. It compresses well when an image has large areas of identical color, and badly when neighboring pixels all differ slightly, which is what photos are made of: sensor noise, soft shadows, gradients and textures. JPG throws away detail the eye barely notices, so it handles photos far more efficiently.
- Photos, lifestyle shots, product images on real backgrounds: convert to JPG. The saving is usually large.
- Screenshots, logos, charts, text graphics, flat illustrations: keep them as PNG. JPG adds fuzzy artifacts around sharp edges and text, and the file may not even be smaller.
- Images that need a transparent background: keep them as PNG, or use WebP on your own site. JPG cannot store transparency.
If you are not sure, convert one file and compare its size with the original PNG in your file manager. That tells you at once whether JPG helps.
What happens to transparency
JPG has no alpha channel, so every transparent pixel needs a real color. The converter fills transparent areas with white by default, and you can choose any other background color before converting. Semi-transparent edges, such as a soft drop shadow or anti-aliased edges around a cutout product, blend into the color you choose.
That choice matters on marketplaces. Etsy's help center says transparent PNG files are not supported and transparent parts appear black on Etsy. Amazon requires the main product image to have a pure white background, RGB 255, 255, 255. Converting a cutout PNG to JPG with a white background solves both.
Warning: If the image will sit on a colored section of your site, pick that color as the background, not white. Otherwise you get a visible white box around the product.
Quality and file size
The quality slider sets how aggressively JPG compresses. Around 80 to 85 is a good balance for product photos viewed on screens. Below about 70, fine textures start to smear and edges show blocky artifacts. Above 90, files grow quickly for little visible gain.
Size in pixels matters as much as format. A 6000 pixel wide PNG converted to JPG is still a 6000 pixel image. If you only need 2048 pixels for a Shopify product page, resize it with the image resizer as well.

Tips for store and marketplace images
- Shopify says PNG is the best file type for most product images, followed by JPEG, and recommends 2048 x 2048 px for square images. That advice assumes you care most about quality. If a PNG photo is many megabytes, a JPG at quality 85 to 90 looks the same on the page and loads faster for shoppers on mobile data.
- Etsy recommends photos at least 2000 pixels in width and height and notes that images over 1 MB may not finish uploading on slow connections. JPG makes that limit much easier to meet.
- Amazon prefers JPEG and needs the pure white background on the main image, so use the white fill for cutout PNGs.
- Keep your master files. Store the original PNG and upload the JPG. If you need to re-edit, start from the PNG.

A worked example
You export 20 product photos from an editor as PNG, and each is 6 to 9 MB at 3000 x 3000 pixels. Drop them here, keep white as the background, choose quality 85 and convert. Each row shows the before and after size and the percentage change, and photos like these usually shrink to a fraction of their PNG size with no visible difference. Now compare with a screenshot of your size chart: converting that to JPG may save little and blur the text, so keep it as PNG.
Converting PNG to JPG on a Mac or Windows PC
For one or two files, built-in apps work. On a Mac, open the PNG in Preview, choose File > Export, pick JPEG and set the quality slider. On Windows, open it in Paint and use File > Save as > JPEG picture, which gives you no quality control and fills transparency with white. For batches, a background color other than white, or a quality setting you choose, this page is faster and works the same on every system.
Is JPG or PNG better?
Neither is better in general; they are built for different images. JPG is better for photos, because it makes them much smaller with little visible loss. PNG is better for graphics, text, logos and anything with transparency, because it stays crisp and lossless. For printing, a high-quality JPG (90 or above) at full resolution prints as well as a PNG for photos, and most print services accept both. Use PNG for printed graphics with fine text.

Troubleshooting
- The JPG is bigger than the PNG. The image is a flat graphic, not a photo. Keep it as PNG.
- A light halo shows around a cutout. The soft edges blended with white. Pick the background color of the page it will sit on.
- Text looks fuzzy. Raise the quality to 90 or more, or keep the file as PNG.
Privacy
The converter works entirely in your browser. Your PNG files are processed on your device and are never uploaded to a server. The new JPG files do not carry the original file's metadata, so camera details and GPS location data, when present, are left out.
