That happens because most modern sites, including Shopify stores, serve WebP to browsers that support it. This converter changes WebP images into JPG, or PNG when you need to keep transparency, directly in your browser.

How to convert WebP to JPG

1. Drag your .webp files into the box at the top of this page, or click it to pick them.
2. Choose the output: JPG for photos, PNG for logos, icons and anything with a transparent background you want to keep.
3. For JPG, set the quality slider. 85 is a good default for photos. Go to 90 or above if the image will be edited again.
4. If the image has transparent areas and you chose JPG, pick the background color that will fill them. White is the default.
5. Download each file, or download the whole batch as a ZIP.

Why websites serve WebP

WebP is an image format developed by Google that supports lossy compression, lossless compression, transparency and animation in one format. Google's own figures say lossless WebP files are 26% smaller than PNGs, and lossy WebP files are 25 to 34% smaller than comparable JPEGs. Smaller images mean faster pages, which is why site owners use it.

Often the site owner never uploaded a WebP file at all. Shopify's CDN, for example, detects which formats a visitor's browser supports and can send WebP or AVIF automatically, falling back to JPG or PNG for older browsers. So a product photo uploaded as JPG can arrive in your browser as WebP, and "Save image as" stores exactly what the browser received.

When you need JPG instead

Every current browser displays WebP, but plenty of other software is less flexible:

• Marketplaces. Etsy accepts .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg and .heic, and Amazon accepts JPEG, TIFF, PNG and GIF. Neither list includes WebP.
• Email. Outlook for Windows does not display WebP images, and Gmail converts them to JPG. Attach or embed JPG if you want every recipient to see the same thing.
• Older desktop apps. Older versions of photo editors, office suites and print shop upload portals may not open WebP at all.
• Some plugins and forms on websites, including review apps and support tickets, only allow JPG and PNG uploads.

Quality and file size

Converting WebP to JPG will not bring back detail. Most WebP images on the web are already lossy, so the JPG encoder is compressing an image that has been compressed once. At quality 85 to 90 the second round is hard to see. At low settings the artifacts of both formats add up, especially around text and sharp edges.

The JPG will usually be larger than the WebP it came from, because WebP compresses more efficiently. PNG output is lossless, so it keeps exactly what the WebP decoded to, but it is much larger for photos. Choose PNG when the image is a graphic, a screenshot or has transparency. JPG and PNG are still-image formats, so an animated WebP cannot stay animated after conversion.

Tips for store and marketplace images

• Do not convert for Shopify. Shopify accepts WebP uploads and serves optimized formats itself, so upload the best original you have.
• Convert for Etsy and Amazon. Use JPG for product photos. If the WebP has a transparent background, keep the white fill, since Etsy shows transparent areas as black and Amazon requires a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255) on the main image.
• Check the size after converting. Images pulled from websites are often resized for display. Etsy recommends at least 2000 pixels in width and height, so run the files through the image resizer only if they are already large; enlarging a small image does not add detail.
• Respect ownership. An image saved from another site belongs to that site's owner. Use supplier images only where you have permission, for example through a dropshipping or wholesale agreement.

How to open WebP files without converting

If you only need to view a WebP, you may not need to convert it at all. Every current browser opens WebP: drag the file into a Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari window. The Photos app in Windows 10 and 11 and recent versions of Preview on the Mac also open it, and Photoshop has opened WebP natively since 2022. Convert when you need to upload, attach or edit the image in software that still refuses it.

Stop getting WebP in the first place

• Ask the site owner or supplier for the original files, which are usually JPG or PNG.
• Screenshots are another route, but they capture screen resolution only and lose detail. Converting the saved file keeps the full size.

A worked example: supplier images for an Etsy listing

A wholesale supplier gives you permission to use their product photos, but "Save image as" in Chrome gives you 12 .webp files. Etsy will not accept them. Drop all 12 here, keep JPG at quality 85, leave the background white in case any have transparent edges, and download the ZIP. Each row shows the old and new file size. Then check the dimensions: if they are under 2000 pixels, they were resized by the website for display, so ask the supplier for originals rather than enlarging them.

Troubleshooting

• The converted image is still animated in the source. JPG and PNG are still formats, so only the first frame of an animated WebP is kept.
• A black background appears after upload. The platform does not support transparency. Convert to JPG with a white or matching background instead of PNG.
• The file is not accepted by the converter. It may be named .webp but be another format, or be damaged. Open it in a browser tab first to confirm it displays.
• Batch limit. Up to 300 files per batch.

Privacy

The conversion runs entirely in your browser. Your WebP files are decoded and saved by your own device, and nothing is uploaded to a server. Metadata is not carried into the converted file either: any EXIF data in the original, such as camera details or GPS location, is left out of the JPG or PNG.
