A clean background is the quickest upgrade a product photo can get. Marketplaces such as Amazon require a pure white background for the main image, store themes look tidier when every product sits on the same background, and a cut-out product on a transparent background can be placed on banners, ads and social posts.
This tool uses an AI segmentation model on our server to find the product in your photo and remove everything else. You choose what goes behind it: nothing (a transparent PNG), pure white, or any color you pick. The before and after view shows the result on a checkerboard, the usual way to show transparency, so you can judge the edges before you download.
How to remove a background
- Drag a photo onto the box above, or click to choose one. JPG, PNG and WEBP work. iPhone HEIC photos need converting first with HEIC to JPG.
- Check the preview of your photo under the file name.
- Choose the Background: Transparent for a cut-out PNG, White for pure white (#FFFFFF), or Color and pick any color with the swatch.
- Click Remove background. The bar shows the upload, your place in line and the progress.
- When Your file is ready appears, the result downloads automatically and the before and after view opens. Drag the slider under the image to compare the original (left) with the result (right).
- Zoom in on the edges: hair, straps, handles, gaps between parts. If they look right, you are done. Click Convert another file for the next photo.
Where your photo goes
The segmentation model is too large to run well inside a phone browser, so the photo is processed on our server. It is uploaded over HTTPS with only the background choice attached: no account, no email and nothing else from your device. The upload is deleted as soon as the job ends. The result is kept for 30 minutes so you can download it, and the page shows when that window closes. After the first download, the Download button keeps a copy in your open tab, so you can save it again until you leave the page.
Product photos are rarely sensitive, but photos of people are personal data in many countries. Only upload photos of people who agreed to have their picture used, such as models you hired or customers who sent a review photo with permission.
Transparent, white or color?
| Choice | You get | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Transparent | A PNG with no background (JPG cannot store transparency) | Banners, ads, social graphics, placing the product on your own backgrounds, collage and mockups |
| White | The product on pure white, RGB 255, 255, 255 | Amazon main images, marketplaces, catalogs, Google Shopping, consistent store grids |
| Color | The product on the color you pick | A store with a branded background color, seasonal collections, Pinterest pins |
Pure white matters for Amazon. Off-white or very light gray backgrounds that look white to your eye are a common reason for main image problems. Choosing White here puts the product on pure #FFFFFF, not a near-white.
Marketplace image requirements (October 2026)
| Platform | Background | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon main image | Pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255); the product should fill about 85% of the frame | At least 1000 px on the longest side for zoom; up to 10,000 px |
| Amazon other images | Any background; lifestyle photos are encouraged | Same as above |
| Shopify | Your choice; consistent backgrounds look best in collection grids | Up to 5000 x 5000 px (25 megapixels) and 20 MB; 2048 x 2048 px is a common square size |
| Etsy | Your choice; Etsy recommends a clean, uncluttered first photo | At least 2000 px on the shortest side is recommended |
| Google Merchant Center | Any, but no watermarks, logos added over the product or promotional text | Clear images of the actual product |
Platforms update their image rules, so check the seller help pages before a large catalog upload. After removing the background, the image resizer can make a square canvas at the size you need.
What it does well, and where it struggles
Background removal is a judgment the model makes pixel by pixel: is this part of the product or not? It is very good at the common case and has known weak spots. Being honest about them saves you from a bad listing.
Works well
- Solid products with clear outlines: mugs, bottles, shoes, bags, boxes, electronics, furniture.
- Products photographed on a plain background that contrasts with them.
- Apparel on a hanger or laid flat, and most people photos with simple hair.
Needs a careful check
- Hair, fur and fluffy textures. Fine strands can be cut off or keep a halo of the old background.
- Glass, clear plastic and liquids. The old background shows through the product, so the model cannot cleanly separate it. Shoot these on white to begin with.
- Products the same color as the background. A white sneaker on a white table gives the model little to go on.
- Thin parts and gaps. Chains, cables, straps and the space inside a handle may keep background or lose pieces.
- Shadows and reflections. They are usually removed with the background, which can make the product look like it floats. Some sellers add a soft shadow back in an editor.
- Several products in one photo. The model may keep only the main one or merge them.
If an edge is wrong, the most reliable fix is a better photo, not more editing: a plain background in a contrasting color, soft even light, and a little space around the product.
Photos that give the best cut-outs
- Contrast: light products on a dark or colored background, dark products on a light one.
- Even light: daylight from a window or two lamps on both sides; harsh shadows get treated as part of the product.
- Sharp focus: blurry edges become blurry cut-outs. Tap the product on your phone screen to focus.
- Space around the product: do not crop tight to the edges; the model needs to see where the product ends.
- Resolution: start large. A 3000 px photo leaves room to crop and still meet Etsy's and Amazon's size guidance.
A consistent look across a whole catalog
A collection grid looks professional when every photo matches, and background removal is only one part of that. Before processing a batch:
- Shoot every product from the same angle and distance, for example straight on at eye level or a 45 degree angle from above.
- Pick one background for the whole collection, such as White for marketplaces or one brand color for your own store, and use it for every photo.
- Use the same margin. After removing the background, place each product on the same square size with similar space around it. The image resizer makes square canvases in one step.
- Name the files by SKU, such as
BG-102-front.png, so uploads and bulk edits match the right product.
The tool processes one photo per job. Click Convert another file after each download; your background choice stays selected for the next photo.
Shadows after removal
Removing the background removes the shadow the product cast on it, so the product can look pasted on. For your own store and social graphics, a soft drop shadow added in an editor (Canva, Photoshop, or the shadow effect in most design apps) grounds the product again: keep it subtle, slightly offset downward and blurred. For Amazon main images, keep it plain and follow the current image rules in Seller Central.
Worked examples
A ceramic mug for an Amazon main image
The mug was photographed on a wooden kitchen table. Choose White and remove the background. Check the inside of the handle, where wood often survives, and the rim, where reflections can be cut too deep. Then use the image resizer to place it on a 2000 x 2000 px square so the mug fills most of the frame, as Amazon's main image rules ask.
A necklace for a Shopify collection
Jewelry on dark velvet has good contrast, but the fine chain is a weak spot. Choose Transparent, compare closely with the slider, and if links disappear, reshoot with the chain laid in a loose curve on a plain light background, which gives the model clearer edges.
Supplier photos for imported products
Product photos from suppliers often come on gray, cluttered or inconsistent backgrounds. Removing them and using White across a collection makes the grid look like one brand. Only edit and publish photos you have the right to use. If you import products from AliExpress, Amazon or other product pages, AM Jarvis Chrome Extension brings them into your Shopify or WooCommerce store, and cleaned images can then replace the supplier versions.
After removing the background
- Resize or square the image for your platform with the image resizer.
- Shrink the file size for a faster store with the image compressor. Transparent PNG files can be large; WEBP keeps transparency at a smaller size.
- Change the format, for example PNG to JPG for a white background image, with the image converter.
Other ways to remove a background
- iPhone and iPad: in Photos, touch and hold the subject until it lifts, then copy or share it as a cut-out.
- Mac: open the image in Preview and use Tools > Remove Background.
- Windows 11: the Paint app has a Remove background button.
- Photoshop, Canva and similar editors: background removal plus brushes to fix edges by hand, useful for hair and jewelry.
- This tool: works in any browser, sets pure white or any color in one step, and shows a before and after view.
Troubleshooting
Parts of the product were removed
The product and background were too similar in color or brightness there. Reshoot on a contrasting background, or fix the area in an editor with a restore brush.
A colored halo remains around the edges
Light from a colored background reflected onto the product edges. Use a neutral background (white or gray) and keep the product a little away from it when shooting.
The result has a white background instead of transparent
Check which background was selected. Many image viewers also show transparent areas as white; the checkerboard in the before and after view is the reliable check.
The photo is refused as too large
The limit is shown in the drop box. Camera RAW exports and huge PNG files are the usual cause. Save the photo as a high quality JPG, or reduce it to around 3000 px on the longest side with the image resizer, and try again.
"This file could not be used"
The file is not a JPG, PNG or WEBP image, or it is damaged. Convert HEIC and other formats first with the image converter.

Limits to know about
- One photo per job, up to the size shown in the drop box.
- Automatic only: there are no brushes to fix edges by hand.
- Hair, glass, thin parts and low contrast photos may need a reshoot or manual retouching.
- The result is deleted from our server 30 minutes after it is ready.
