Etsy Tag Generator

Build Etsy tags from real search suggestions, keep every tag under 20 characters and copy your 13 picks in one click.

Etsy tag generator

Each tag is 20 characters or fewer. Pick up to 13.

In short

To generate Etsy tags, type the item you sell in two or three words, add a few attributes such as material or style, and run the search. The tool turns real search suggestions into tag ideas of 20 characters or fewer, flags near duplicates, and copies your 13 picks as a comma-separated list for the Etsy listing editor.

Tags are one of the main ways Etsy matches your listing to what shoppers type. Each listing gets 13 of them, each capped at 20 characters, and that limit cuts off many of the phrases people actually search. This tool starts from real search suggestions for your product and reshapes them into tags that fit.

You still choose the final 13. The generator does the tedious part: finding phrases, trimming them to length, counting characters and spotting repeats that waste a slot.

How to use the Etsy tag generator

  1. Describe what you sell in two or three words, such as "ceramic mug" or "leather dog collar". Use the plain name a shopper would type, not your brand name.
  2. Add attributes (optional), separated by commas: materials, styles, colors or who it is for, such as "stoneware, speckled, minimalist, gift for her". The tool combines them with your product word into extra ideas.
  3. Find tags. The tool collects search suggestions for your phrase, including the A to Z variations, and shows two groups: From search suggestions and Built from your words.
  4. Pick up to 13 tags. Click an idea to add it. Each chip shows its character count, and "cut" means the original search phrase was shortened to fit 20 characters. Hover to see the original phrase.
  5. Add your own. Type any tag into the add box. The tool rejects tags over 20 characters or starting with an apostrophe or hyphen, just as Etsy does.
  6. Fix the flags. Exact duplicates and near duplicates (such as "gold ring" and "gold rings") are marked so you can swap them.
  7. Copy your list. The tags copy as a comma-separated list. In the Etsy listing editor, paste them into the Tags field and click Add.

Search suggestions come from Google's US autocomplete, which reflects what people type when they look for products, and results are cached for a day. You get 20 free searches per day. Questions, comparisons and store names such as "amazon" or "reddit" are filtered out, because they are not useful as tags.

Etsy tag rules in 2026

These rules come from Etsy Help and the Etsy Seller Handbook.

RuleDetail
Number of tagsUp to 13 per listing. Etsy recommends using all 13.
LengthUp to 20 characters per tag, spaces included.
CharactersLetters, numbers and spaces. Apostrophes and hyphens can be used inside words but cannot start a tag. Accented letters are allowed.
PhrasesMulti-word, natural phrases work better than single words.
Attributes and categoriesBoth act like tags. If a phrase already appears in your category or attributes, you do not need it as a tag.
Plurals and spellingEtsy matches root words, so you do not need singular and plural versions. Do not misspell on purpose; search corrects common typos.
LanguageWrite tags in your shop language. Tags in other languages do not help your listings appear in search.

How to choose 13 good tags

Treat each tag as a separate search you want to show up for. Spread them across different angles instead of repeating one idea:

  • What it is: the product in the words shoppers use, plus close synonyms.
  • Material and method: stoneware, sterling silver, hand stamped, wheel thrown.
  • Style: minimalist, boho, rustic, mid century.
  • Who it is for and why: gift for dad, housewarming gift, teacher gift.
  • Occasion or season: Christmas, wedding, Mothers Day, when it genuinely fits.

Worked example: a handmade speckled mug

Search "ceramic mug" with the attributes "stoneware, speckled, minimalist, gift for her". A set of 13, all within the limit: handmade mug (12), ceramic coffee mug (18), pottery mug (11), stoneware mug (13), speckled mug (12), wheel thrown mug (16), minimalist mug (14), large tea cup (13), coffee lover gift (17), gift for tea lover (18), housewarming gift (17), mothers day gift (16), rustic kitchen decor (20). The category (Mugs) and attributes (color, material) already cover plain "mug" and "white", so no slot is spent on them.

Worked example: a digital download

For a printable wedding planner, searches lean on format and use: wedding planner (15), printable planner (17), wedding checklist (17), bride to be gift (16), wedding binder (14), digital planner (15), engagement gift (15), wedding budget (14), planner pdf (11), goodnotes planner (17), plus three style or theme tags. Test "instant download" in the title rather than a tag if your category already marks it digital.

Tip: Before you pick tags, set the most specific category and fill every attribute that applies (color, material, occasion). Those count as tags already, which frees your 13 slots for phrases they do not cover.

What the results mean

Each idea comes from a phrase people search, trimmed or reworded to fit 20 characters. A suggestion is a starting point, not a guarantee of traffic. Keep only tags that describe your actual item, because Etsy also weighs how shoppers respond to a listing, and irrelevant clicks do not turn into sales.

  • Character count: anything over 20 cannot be saved in Etsy, so the tool keeps ideas at or under the limit.
  • Duplicate and near duplicate flags: two identical tags waste a slot. Near duplicates, such as "gold ring" and "gold rings", also waste one because Etsy matches root words.
  • Slots left: the counter stops at 13 because Etsy will not accept a fourteenth tag.

How tags work with your title and attributes

Etsy looks at your title, tags, category and attributes together when it decides whether a listing matches a search, so plan them as one set instead of filling each box separately.

  • Title: lead with the plain description of the item, using the two or three most important phrases from your tag list. Etsy advises titles that read naturally, not a string of keywords.
  • Tags: use them for the phrases that did not fit in the title, such as gift angles, occasions and synonyms.
  • Attributes and category: fill these first, since they already count as tags and cost you no slots.

When one listing gets views, check which searches brought shoppers in (Shop Manager shows search terms in your stats) and reuse those phrases on similar items.

Who uses this tool

  • New Etsy sellers filling 13 tags for a first listing without guessing.
  • Print on demand sellers writing tags for dozens of designs on the same product.
  • Established shops refreshing tags on listings with few views.
  • Sellers on other marketplaces who need short keyword phrases for product tags, since the 20-character discipline works well elsewhere too.

Troubleshooting

  • Few or no suggestions. The phrase is too specific or too long. Try the plain product name, such as "mug" instead of "speckled stoneware coffee mug", and put the rest in attributes.
  • "No suggestions fit 20 characters". Every suggestion was too long to trim sensibly. Use the ideas built from your words, or search a shorter phrase.
  • Tags look odd after trimming. Check the original phrase on hover and rewrite it in the add box.
  • You hit the daily limit. Searches you already ran today come back from cache. New searches reset tomorrow.

Common Etsy tag mistakes

  • Single-word tags. "mug" competes with every mug on Etsy. "speckled coffee mug" says what makes yours different.
  • Repeating your category. If your category is Mugs, a tag that only says "mug" adds nothing.
  • Stuffing one word into every tag. Thirteen variations of "boho earrings" reach fewer searches than thirteen different ideas.
  • Using brand names you do not own. Other companies' trademarks in tags can get a listing reported for intellectual property infringement.
  • Chasing unrelated trends. A trending phrase that does not describe your item brings clicks that do not convert.
  • Setting tags once and forgetting them. Review listings with few views every few months and test new phrases.

Limits of any tag tool

No outside tool can see Etsy's own search data or your listing's quality score. Suggestions tell you what people type, not how many Etsy buyers search it or how many listings compete. Use your Shop Manager search terms as the final judge, and keep what brings visits and sales.

Once your tags are set, check your margins with the Etsy fee calculator so a new listing is priced to profit after fees. Still naming your shop? Try the store name generator, which flags names over Etsy's 20-character limit. For research beyond one listing, the AM Jarvis Niche Research and Keyword Miner mines Google autocomplete searches from A to Z across 18 countries and groups them into keyword maps. The niche keyword research guide explains how to turn those lists into product ideas.

Frequently asked questions

How many tags can you use on Etsy?

Etsy allows up to 13 tags per listing, and each tag can be up to 20 characters long including spaces. Etsy recommends using all 13, since every tag is another chance to match a search. Your category and attributes also act like tags on top of those 13.

Should I use all 13 tags on every Etsy listing?

Yes, as long as each tag honestly describes the item. An empty slot is a search you cannot appear in. Fill them with different angles, such as material, style, recipient and occasion, rather than 13 versions of the same phrase.

Should Etsy tags be single words or phrases?

Use multi-word phrases. Etsy advises natural phrases shoppers would actually type, such as "silver hoop earrings" instead of "silver". Phrases describe your item more precisely and face less competition than single words, as long as each one stays within the 20-character limit.

Do I need plural versions of my Etsy tags?

No. Etsy search matches the root words in a shopper's query to the root words in your listing, so "necklace" and "necklaces" are treated alike. Adding both wastes a slot you could use for a different phrase, which is why the tool flags them as near duplicates.

Do Etsy attributes count as tags?

Yes. Etsy says the attributes and categories you add act like tags. If an exact phrase already appears in your category or attributes, such as a color or material, you do not need to repeat it as a tag. Use those slots for other searches instead.

Where do the tag ideas come from?

From Google's US search suggestions for your phrase and its A to Z variations, which show what people type when shopping. The tool trims them to 20 characters and adds combinations of your own attributes. It does not use Etsy's private search data, so check your Shop Manager stats to see which tags bring visits.

Why will Etsy not accept my tag?

The most common reasons are that the tag is longer than 20 characters or starts with an apostrophe or hyphen. Tags may contain letters, numbers, spaces and accented letters, with apostrophes and hyphens only inside words. You also cannot add a fourteenth tag.

How often should I change my Etsy tags?

Give new tags a few weeks to collect data, then review listings with few views every two to three months. Keep tags that bring visits in your search term stats and replace the ones that bring none. Update seasonal tags ahead of holidays.
