A store name has to work in several places at once: your logo, your domain, your social handles, and on Etsy a strict character limit. This tool generates a long list of candidates from your keywords so you can shortlist quickly, then check the one detail that rules out most names: whether the domain is free.
How to use the store name generator
- Enter one to three keywords, separated by commas, that describe what you sell or the feeling you want, such as "candle", "linen" or "trail".
- Pick a style: brandable, descriptive, compound or with suffix. Switching style regenerates the list straight away.
- Generate. Each card shows the name, the name written the Etsy way (no spaces, capital letters between words) and its character count.
- Set the maximum length with the slider (6 to 40 characters, default 20). Longer names are hidden, and the tool tells you how many.
- Check the Etsy badge. Each card says whether the name fits Etsy's 4 to 20 character rule.
- Check the domain. The "Check name.com" link opens a domain search for that exact .com.
- Star names you like. Starred names go into a shortlist that stays in this browser. Copy the shortlist to share it, or click New batch to generate a fresh set.
The four name styles
| Style | What you get | Good for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brandable | Invented or blended words that sound like a brand | Long-term brands, easier .com availability | Says nothing about the product until people know you |
| Descriptive | Names built from your keywords | Niche stores where shoppers should instantly see what you sell | Harder to trademark, often taken as a .com |
| Compound | Two words joined into one | Memorable names with a hint of the product | Can read awkwardly when the words run together |
| With suffix | Your keyword plus a short retail word such as Co, Supply or Studio | Getting an available domain close to a keyword | Suffix names can feel generic |
Worked example: naming a candle shop
With the keyword "candle", a descriptive result might read like Soy Candle Supply, a compound result like WickHouse, a suffix result like Candle Co, and a brandable result an invented word that only hints at light or scent. Here is how a shortlist of four gets cut to one:
- Soy Candle Supply (SoyCandleSupply, 15 characters): fits Etsy, but the .com is likely taken and it rules out diffusers later. Out.
- Candle Co (CandleCo, 8 characters): too generic to trademark or remember. Out.
- WickHouse (9 characters): easy to say and spell, hints at the product, room to grow into home fragrance. Check the .com and handles.
- An invented name: the .com is probably free, but you will spend more on explaining what you sell. Keep as a backup.
Generate in more than one style: a name from one list often sparks a better idea for another.
How to shortlist
- Cross out anything you would not be comfortable saying on the phone.
- Cross out names that would stop making sense if you added a second product line.
- Check the domain for the rest, then the social handles.
- Run a trademark search on the last three to five names.
Etsy shop name rules
Etsy is stricter than most platforms. According to Etsy Help, shop names must be:
- 4 to 20 characters long
- Free of spaces and special characters (use capital letters to separate words, as in LinenAndLoom)
- Free of profanity
- Not already used by another Etsy member
- Not infringing on someone else's trademark
How to change your Etsy shop name
You can change the name as often as you like before the shop opens. After it opens, change it from the Shop Name tab in your Shop Manager settings. Etsy allows up to five changes before a change needs approval from Etsy Support, and changing only capitalization or going back to a previous name does not count. Your old shop URL redirects to the new one, other sellers cannot take your old name, and Etsy shows an icon next to the name for 45 days to tell buyers it changed (source: Etsy Help, checked September 2026).
Tip: Keep the length slider at 20 when naming an Etsy shop. The generator already shows each idea without spaces, so "Linen and Loom" appears as LinenAndLoom with its real count of 12.
Shopify store names and domains
On Shopify, the store name is what shoppers see in your storefront, emails and checkout, and you can edit it later in Shopify admin under Settings > General in the store details. Your myshopify.com address, set when you open the store, cannot be changed, which is one more reason to connect a custom domain. What is expensive to change later is everything built around the name: your domain, logo, packaging, reviews and any links other sites have given you. So settle the domain before you settle the name.
- Try the .com first. Shoppers default to typing .com. If the exact .com is taken by an active business, treat the name as unavailable rather than settling for a hyphenated version.
- Skip hyphens and numbers. They are easy to mishear and mistype when you say the name out loud.
- Buy the domain the day you decide. Good names do not stay open for long.
- Match your social handles. Check Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest for the same handle before you commit.

Check trademarks before you commit
An available domain does not mean a name is safe to use. Search the name in the USPTO trademark search (and the EUIPO or UK IPO databases if you sell in Europe or the UK), focusing on the classes that cover your products. A registered trademark on a similar name for similar goods is a real risk: you could be forced to rebrand after you have built traffic and reviews. This page is not legal advice, so talk to a trademark attorney if a name is close to an existing mark.
Who uses a store name generator
- Etsy sellers who need a name that fits 20 characters with no spaces.
- New Shopify merchants who want a name with an available .com.
- Dropshippers testing niches who need several store names quickly.
- Freelancers and agencies brainstorming with a client, using the shortlist to share options.
Common naming mistakes
- Names that are hard to spell. Say the name to a friend and ask them to type it. If they get it wrong, customers will too.
- Copying a competitor's pattern. A name that sounds like a bigger brand invites confusion and trademark complaints.
- Too narrow. "BestYogaMats" gets awkward the day you add yoga blocks.
- Too long for Etsy. Anything over 20 characters simply cannot be registered.
- Falling for a name before checking the domain. Run the domain search first, then fall in love.
Troubleshooting
- "No names fit that length". Raise the maximum length or use shorter keywords.
- Names repeat a word. The generator skips names like "Budget Budget Travel", but similar ideas can appear across batches. Click New batch for a fresh set.
- Your shortlist disappeared. It is saved only in this browser. Private windows and cleared site data remove it, so copy it somewhere safe.
How it works and what it cannot do
Names are built in your browser from your keywords and word lists (adjectives, nature words, retail suffixes and invented endings), so nothing you type is sent to a server. The tool does not register domains, check live availability, search trademarks or check social handles. Treat every idea as a candidate until those checks pass.
