Reading a PDF on a phone or ereader is a pinch-and-scroll exercise. The page was designed for A4 or Letter paper, so on a six inch screen the text is either too small to read or you zoom and pan around every page. An EPUB solves that: its text reflows to fit the screen, and you can pick the font size you like.
This converter extracts the text and images from your PDF on our server with Calibre, the open-source ebook toolkit, and builds an EPUB from them. That direction is harder than it sounds, because a PDF knows where each line sits on a page but not which lines form a paragraph. Here is how to get the best result and what to expect.
How to convert PDF to EPUB
- Drop the PDF onto the box, or click it to choose the file.
- If the PDF asks for a password when you open it, remove that first with Unlock PDF.
- Click Convert to EPUB and follow the progress bar through upload, line and conversion.
- The EPUB downloads on its own when it is ready.
- Open it in an ebook app and page through a chapter or two before you copy it to a device or share it.
Which PDFs convert well
| Kind of PDF | Result |
|---|---|
| Novel, report or guide in one column, exported from Word or Google Docs | Good: paragraphs flow, headings and images are kept |
| Text with footnotes, running headers and page numbers | Readable, but headers, page numbers and footnotes can land in the middle of paragraphs |
| Two-column articles and magazines | Mixed: columns may be read in the wrong order |
| Tables, forms, spreadsheets | Poor: an ebook is the wrong home for wide tables |
| Comics, photo books, designed brochures | Poor: keep the PDF, the design is the content |
| Scanned pages with no text layer | Nothing to convert; run OCR first |
Length itself is not a problem. A 400 page novel converts as reliably as a 10 page report; it just takes longer, and the file size limit shown in the box applies. What decides the quality is the layout of each page, not how many there are.
The quick test before you start: open the PDF and try to select a sentence. If you can, the PDF has real text and can be converted. If not, it is a scan. Make it searchable with the OCR PDF tool and convert the searchable copy; the tool tells you when a PDF has no text layer instead of returning an empty ebook.
Reading the EPUB on your device
- Kobo, PocketBook and most ereaders: copy the EPUB to the device over USB or add it through the device's own app.
- iPhone, iPad and Mac: open the file in Apple Books.
- Android and the web: upload it to Google Play Books, which accepts your own EPUB files.
- Kindle: Kindles do not open EPUB files copied over USB. Send the EPUB with Amazon's Send to Kindle app, web page or email address; as of October 2026 it accepts EPUB and converts it into a Kindle book that reflows on the device.
- Windows and Linux: Calibre or Thorium Reader, both free.
Example: a 60 page guide on a Kobo
You have a 60 page PDF guide to growing vegetables, exported from Word, and want to read it on a Kobo Clara in the garden.
- Open the PDF and select a sentence. It highlights word by word, so the text is real.
- Drop it into the box and click Convert to EPUB.
- Open the EPUB in Calibre's viewer on your computer and skim the first two chapters. The running header "Vegetable Guide 2026" appears at each old page break.
- In Calibre's editor, search for that header and replace it with nothing. One replace-all removes all 60.
- Connect the Kobo with a USB cable and copy the EPUB into its main folder. Eject, and the guide appears in the library with adjustable text.
EPUB or Word: which conversion do you need?
| Goal | Convert to |
|---|---|
| Read comfortably on an ereader or phone | EPUB (this page) |
| Edit the text, change wording, reuse sections | Word |
| Publish an ebook in stores | Word first to edit, then export EPUB from your writing app |
| Keep the exact page design | Stay with PDF |
Clean up the ebook in Calibre
For a document you will read once, the converted EPUB is usually good enough as it is. For something you will keep, share or sell, a few minutes in Calibre's free ebook editor makes a big difference:
- Add the EPUB to Calibre, right-click it and choose Edit book.
- Use search and replace to remove repeated running headers or page numbers that ended up inside the text.
- Join paragraphs that were split at a page break.
- Fix the title and author under Edit metadata, so the book shows up properly in your library.
- Add or check the table of contents with Tools > Table of Contents.
If you wrote the book yourself, there is an easier path: export an EPUB from the original document instead of converting the PDF. Most writing apps can do it directly, and the result is always cleaner than working backwards from fixed pages.
Tip: Hyphenated words at line ends in the PDF can come through as "pro- duct". Search for a hyphen followed by a space to find them quickly.
Troubleshooting
- "No text layer": the PDF is a scan. Run OCR first, then convert the searchable copy.
- Words joined or split oddly: some PDFs place each word separately, so spaces have to be guessed. Clean those up in Calibre's editor.
- Chapters run into each other: in Calibre's editor, place the cursor before each chapter heading and split the file there, so every chapter starts on a fresh screen. Then rebuild the table of contents.
- Images are tiny: they keep the size they had in the PDF. Small images from a print PDF stay small.
- "Not available yet": the ebook converter on our server is being set up or updated. Try again later.
Selling or publishing an ebook
If you plan to sell the book, the format requirements matter. Amazon KDP lists EPUB, DOCX and Kindle Create files (KPF) as its recommended formats as of October 2026, asks that an EPUB be checked with Kindle Previewer before upload, and no longer accepts MOBI for fixed-layout ebooks. Apple Books, Kobo and Google Play Books all take EPUB. A converted PDF is a starting point for a store-ready EPUB, not a finished one: clean it up in Calibre and check it in each store's previewer.
Ebooks and printable guides also sell well as digital downloads on Etsy, often delivered as both PDF and EPUB. Before you write one, AM Jarvis Etsy Research scores keywords from real listings and shop sales, so you can see whether buyers search for your topic and what similar downloads cost.
What happens to your PDF
The PDF is uploaded over HTTPS, converted on our server and deleted: the upload as soon as the job ends, the EPUB 30 minutes after it is ready. The daily number of free conversions and the size limit are shown on the tool. The ebook converter is an optional component on our server, and if it is being installed or updated, the tool says so and you can try again a little later. Need the opposite direction? The EPUB to PDF converter turns a DRM-free ebook into printable pages.
