The Shopify App Store lists hundreds of SEO apps, and most of them promise the same things: higher rankings, faster pages, AI-written meta tags. In practice they differ a lot in what they change on your store, how they charge, and how much they overlap with what Shopify and your theme already do.
This comparison covers nine apps that come up again and again when merchants ask what to install. Pricing below is what each listing showed on apps.shopify.com in September 2026. App pricing changes often, so check the listing for current pricing before you commit.
What Shopify already does without an app
Before paying for anything, know what you already have. Shopify generates sitemap.xml and robots.txt automatically, adds canonical tags to limit duplicate content, and serves every store over SSL. Your theme builds title tags and meta descriptions from the fields in each product's Search engine listing section, and most current themes output basic Product structured data.
You can also edit page titles, meta descriptions, URL handles and image alt text in the admin, create redirects in Content > Menus > URL redirects, and bulk edit SEO fields through a product CSV. So an SEO app is not a requirement. It is a way to save time on a large catalog or to add something the theme lacks, such as richer schema or image compression. If you are still on the basics, start with the Shopify SEO tips list and install an app later.
How to judge any Shopify SEO app
- Name the gap first. Slow images, missing review stars in search, 500 products with blank meta descriptions and broken links are four different problems with four different best tools.
- Check what the app changes. Some apps only report issues. Others rewrite your metadata, compress and replace images, or inject code into the theme. Read the listing and the most recent reviews to see which.
- Check for duplicate structured data. If your theme already outputs Product schema and the app adds its own, run a product URL through Google's Rich Results Test after install and make sure only one Product item appears.
- Read the plan limits. Image optimization apps usually charge by images per month, and AI features by credits. A free plan that covers 50 images does little for a 2,000 product store.
- Know what happens on uninstall. Ask whether compressed images can be restored and whether metadata written by the app stays in Shopify. Metadata saved into the standard SEO fields stays; schema injected by the app disappears.
The apps, one by one
Booster SEO (BOOSTER AI SEO + AEO Optimizer)
One of the most reviewed SEO apps on the store. It scans the store for issues and applies fixes: meta tags, image compression, AI alt text, broken link detection and structured data, plus llms.txt and metadata aimed at AI search tools. The listing shows a free plan, Pro at $39 per month and Premium at $69 per month, with a 14-day trial on paid plans and cheaper annual billing. It suits merchants who want one app to handle the routine work and are comfortable letting it make changes automatically.
Avada AI SEO Image Optimizer
Avada combines image compression and alt text, speed features such as lazy loading and minification, broken link checks, an HTML sitemap, structured data, meta tag optimization and an AI audit agent. The free plan includes 100 image optimizations and 20 on-page audits. Pro is listed at $34.95 per month and Enterprise at $99 per month, with a 7-day trial. It is a good fit for stores whose main problem is heavy images and slow pages, with SEO fixes as a bonus.
SearchPie by PieLab
SearchPie is an all-in-one tool covering JSON-LD schema, image compression, bulk meta tags, breadcrumbs, 404 detection, Search Console integration and Core Web Vitals tracking. The free Starter plan includes daily monitoring, 50 image compressions and bulk meta tags. Premium is listed at $39 per month (adding schema for price and ratings) and Enterprise at $99 per month, each with a 7-day trial. It suits small and mid-size stores that want schema and metadata in one place.
Plug in SEO by Plug in Useful
Plug in SEO has been around for years and is built around its SEO scanner, which checks for missing tags, broken schema and broken links, then helps you fix them. Newer features include AI keyword research, AI title and description writing, speed analysis and Search Console integration. There is no free plan on the current listing: Lite is $29.99, Standard $49.99 and Premium $79.99 per month, with a 7-day trial. It suits merchants who want a checklist-style audit they work through themselves.
SEO Manager by venntov
SEO Manager focuses on metadata across products, collections and pages, plus broken link monitoring, 404 redirects, structured data, Search Console and IndexNow. Bulk editing and more automation sit in the higher tiers. Plans are listed at $9 (Starter), $29 (Essential) and $59 (Professional) per month, with a 7-day trial. The low entry price makes it a reasonable choice for smaller stores that mainly need redirect and metadata control.
Smart SEO AI and Image Optimizer by Sherpas Design
Smart SEO generates meta tags, alt text and product descriptions with AI, compresses images, adds JSON-LD, checks broken links and handles IndexNow and sitemaps. The free plan covers a 100-page broken link check, 50 images and 20 AI generations. Paid plans are listed at $14.99 (Pro), $24.99 (Business) and $49.99 (Premium) per month, with a 7-day trial. It is one of the cheaper ways to get JSON-LD and bulk optimization, which suits budget-conscious stores.
Tiny SEO Speed Image Optimizer by TinyIMG
TinyIMG started as an image compressor and now adds AI alt text, JSON-LD, lazy loading, minification, broken link detection with 301 redirects, site audits, IndexNow and metadata tools. Pricing is based on monthly image optimizations: free to install with 50 per month, then Beginner at $14, Advanced at $23 and Expert at $49 per month. It suits image-heavy stores (fashion, home, art) where page weight is the bigger issue.
Ilana's JSON-LD for SEO by Ilana Davis LLC
This app does one thing: structured data. It covers products, breadcrumbs, blog articles, FAQs, recipes and video, works with more than 20 review apps, and is built to stay consistent with Google Merchant Center data. The listing shows a single Annual Pro plan at $399 per year with a 7-day trial, and includes a data audit and ongoing monitoring. It suits stores that care about rich results and want schema done carefully, and it pairs well with a separate speed or metadata app.
Yoast SEO for Shopify
Yoast brings its well-known SEO and readability analysis from WordPress to Shopify, along with automated structured data, technical fixes, bulk editing with import and export, AI title and meta suggestions, and llms.txt generation. The listing shows Yoast SEO Premium at $19 per month or $190 per year, with a 14-day trial. It suits merchants who write a lot of product and blog copy and like a traffic-light checklist while they write.

Which app for which store
- New store, under 100 products: you probably need no app. If you want one, a free plan from SearchPie, Smart SEO or Booster covers basic metadata and image checks.
- Large catalog with blank meta descriptions: an app with bulk metadata templates (SearchPie, SEO Manager, Smart SEO) or a bulk editor that writes directly into Shopify's own SEO fields.
- Slow pages and big images: Avada or TinyIMG, then test again with real user data in Search Console.
- Want review stars and rich results: JSON-LD for SEO, or the schema features in SearchPie or Smart SEO, after checking your theme's existing schema.
- Heavy blog and content work: Yoast, for the writing checklist.
- Want a to-do list you work through: Plug in SEO.
Mistakes merchants make with SEO apps
The most common mistake is stacking apps. Two image optimizers can compress the same image twice, and two schema apps produce two Product items that confuse Google. Keep one app per job and uninstall the rest.
The second is letting AI rewrite every title and meta description with no review. Automated metadata is fine as a starting point, but spot check 20 products before applying it store-wide, especially for brand names, sizes and claims you cannot back up.
The third is treating the app's SEO score as the goal. A score of 95 out of 100 means the app's checklist is complete. It says nothing about whether your collections target searches people actually make. Use Search Console impressions and clicks as the real measure, and run a proper Shopify SEO audit once a year.
Warning: Before uninstalling an image optimizer, check whether it offers a restore option for original images. Some keep backups only for a limited period.
A note on AI search features and llms.txt
Many listings now lead with "AEO", AI search optimization or llms.txt generation. It is worth being clear about what that buys you. Google's own documentation on AI features says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema. The same things that help regular rankings (crawlable pages, clear titles, useful product and collection content, accurate structured data) are what count.
An llms.txt file is a proposed convention that some AI tools may read. It does no harm, and several apps above create one at no extra effort. Just do not pay for a higher plan only for that feature, and do not treat it as a substitute for fixing thin descriptions or blank meta fields.
What to check in the first two weeks after installing
Most paid plans come with a 7 or 14 day trial, which is enough to see whether an app earns its place if you check the right things:
- Run three product URLs, one collection and the homepage through the Rich Results Test and confirm there are no duplicate or broken schema items.
- Open ten products and read the titles and meta descriptions the app wrote or suggested. Look for wrong sizes, invented claims and repeated phrasing.
- Compare mobile page speed on a product page before and after install, using the same tool both times.
- Note the plan limits you actually hit: images per month, AI credits, pages audited. That tells you which tier you really need.
If the app has not solved the gap you named at the start by the end of the trial, uninstall it and try the next candidate rather than paying to keep it "just in case".
Where bulk SEO editing fits
Many stores do not need an all-in-one suite. They need to fix SEO titles and meta descriptions on hundreds of products at once, usually after an import. Shopify's product CSV can do this, and so can several apps above. AM Jarvis Bulk Edit Pro also handles this specific job: it bulk edits SEO titles and meta descriptions (along with prices, status, vendor and product type) on Shopify and WooCommerce products, shows a preview before applying, and can revert a change in one click. It is not an audit, schema or image tool, so pair it with one of the apps above if you need those.
If your titles themselves need work, start with the product title SEO guide, and for the exact fields and length guidance, see editing SEO titles and meta descriptions in Shopify.
